Goodbye, Dear Emmy

Miss Emmy Lou
February 13, 2000-July 21, 2008
Beloved Pet, Great Companion... You will be missed!

Our beloved black lab, Emmy, died very early this morning. She's had it rough the past year or so, especially the past few months. As is common with labs, she had hip problems, and since she was a bigger lab it affected her greatly. The past five days were the worst, as she refused to eat (even treats, eventually) and finally shut down. I was with her when it happened, and while it was one of the hardest things I've been through, it was nice to finally see her at peace. She was a huge part of this family, and was one of our "kids" before there really were kids!

Emmy was always happy, and usually had a smile on her face. Yes, she smiled... :) You'd walk in the door and she'd jump up and give you a gentle kiss on your lips. It was always the highlight of coming home from work, and I missed it when she was unable to jump like that anymore. She loved to swim, roll in the grass, and make snow angels. Emmy was just a great dog and friend, and will be extremely missed, just as she was loved.

This is so much harder than I ever thought it would be...

I just wanted to post some of the wonderful e-mails I've gotten in response...

Mark Trammell:
I am so sorry to hear of this. Emmy was a very loving dog with enough joy to lift anyone's spirit. She was my friend, and I too will miss her. Another friend of mine has had dogs over the years that I've watched grow up and loved, and it is hard to let them go. I find comfort in knowing that they fulfill their lives bringing happiness to those around them. "A man's best friend". <3

Uncle Brian:
So sorry to hear this. Yes, it is much harder than you would ever think it would be. Sheila can attest to how it affected me and our entire house. We are glad she is at peace now and am sure she will be leaving a big empty space around the house for you and the kids. It is definitely never easy. Thank you for sharing with us. Our prayers of comfort are with you.

Aunt Roi:
Oh, Nikki, I am soooooo sorry for your loss. I remember babysitting for her when she was a puppy. Yes she was a great dog, and a member fo the family. I remember her smiling too. She will be sorely missed.....

Erin Kelly:
Aww I'm so sorry to hear this!! Emmy was the best!!

Grandma Wolf:
Yes, our sympathies are with your family . It is very hard to lose a pet. They each have their own special characteristics that we miss. I did not know she was that old. Thank you for letting us know.

Robin Gaff:
She could still wiggle her butt and do her hurph-hurph (happy dance and noise) pretty good. I will miss her talking to me, glad we had a good talk last time.

Steve Freeze:
Hey you, I hate so bad to hear about Emmy. My parents just had to put down my dog not too long ago. I’d had him since Freshman year of high school, so I totally understand where you’re coming from. He wasn’t my ‘kid’ obviously, but it’s true what they say in that dogs are a man’s best friend. I was somewhat lucky in that I’d been moved out almost four years while he went through the process of “growing old” so I didn’t have to watch it up close and personal. It was still a striking contrast to see him in his final days before they finally made the decision to put him down. You’re a stronger person than I am. At least you could sit with Emmy for her final breaths. I wouldn’t even come into the same town.

Uncle Jim:
Nikki, we are so sorry to hear of Emmy's passing. We know she was a good dog and a beloved member of the family. She'll be missed by all.

Tanya Kaanta:
I'm so sorry!!!
I know that Emmy is in a nice happy place of peace...
you were a great family for her.

Cindy Wolf:
We were so sorry to hear about Emmy. I knew she was getting around with more difficulty lately, but never knew she was failing doing so poorly. She was a lucky dog to be a part of a loving, caring family as yours. You took such great care of her and made her feel as if she was "queen of the house." She was a great pet and companion to the whole family, as is Orion. How are the kids taking the loss of Emmy? I am sure they will miss her, as we all will, especially the warm greeting she gave when we came to the house.

Myka Fernandez:
